Steve Alford to retire after 2026-27 Nevada basketball season

Nevada Wolf Pack men’s basketball head coach Steve Alford has announced he will retire at the conclusion of the 2026-27 season. The announcement marks the end of a 36-year coaching career.

Alford enters his final period with 724 career wins, ranking 10th among active Division I coaches. His career includes coaching stints at Missouri State, Iowa, New Mexico, UCLA, and Nevada. He is one of only two coaches in NCAA history to lead six different programs to the NCAA Tournament.

During his tenure in the Mountain West, Alford has secured 292 victories, the third-most all-time in the conference. His accolades include two Mountain West Conference titles, four regular-season crowns, and three league coach of the year awards. In his official statement, Alford noted, “After 36 years, I feel like this is the right time to step away from the bench,” and expressed gratitude to the University of Nevada and the Reno community.
