Steve Buscemi and the impact of 9/11 on Hollywood
Actor Steve Buscemi, a former firefighter with the FDNY, returned to his old station, Engine 55 in Manhattan, to assist in search and rescue efforts following the September 11 attacks. Having served in the department during the 1980s before pursuing an acting career, Buscemi joined his former colleagues at Ground Zero on September 12, 2001, working 12-hour shifts to clear debris and search for survivors.
The terrorist attacks also significantly impacted the film industry. Hollywood responded to the events by canceling or altering various film projects. For instance, the release of ‘Collateral Damage’ starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was delayed from October 2001 to 2002, and specific scenes involving aircraft hijackings were removed. Other productions, such as a planned Jackie Chan film involving the World Trade Center, were scrapped entirely.
