Steve Clarke reveals pressure on SFA for World Cup contract

Former Scotland national football team manager Steve Clarke has revealed that he had to pressure the Scottish Football Association (SFA) to secure a contract extension prior to this summer’s World Cup. Speaking at a Spartans Community Foundation dinner in Edinburgh, Clarke stated that by March, he had not received an offer, leading him to believe the governing body was “hedging their bets” by waiting for the tournament results.

Clarke described the negotiation process as being “like drawing teeth.” He applied public pressure in March to force progress, leading to intensive negotiations between April and mid-May. He ultimately issued an ultimatum, stating he would resign if an agreement was not reached before the tournament. While the SFA eventually provided a four-year deal, Clarke admitted he had already planned to step down if Scotland failed to progress beyond the group stage.

Scotland’s tournament included a 1-0 victory over Haiti, but they subsequently lost 1-0 to Morocco and 3-0 to Brazil, resulting in their exit from the competition.
