Steve Gollschewski: Former Queensland Police Commissioner farewelled in Brisbane
Nearly 800 people gathered at Brisbane City Hall on Monday to farewell former Queensland Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski. The service honored the 67-year-old, who died on September 4 after a battle with lung cancer.
Gollschewski, affectionately known as ‘Golly’, was the state’s 21st police commissioner, having been appointed in April 2025. He was forced to step down ten months later following a cancer diagnosis and eventually retired in February 2026. During his 46-year career, he became Queensland’s third-longest serving officer.
Attendees included Queensland Premier David Crisafulli, Governor Jeannette Young, and Tasmania’s Police Commissioner Donna Adams. Mourners described Gollschewski as a calm, ethical, and selfless leader who guided the state through various crises. His family, including his wife Rebecca and six children, shared personal reflections on his character and his dedication to his service and family.
