Steve Hackett and Steve Rothery announce new album ‘The Roaring Waves’

Progressive rock musicians Steve Hackett (Genesis) and Steve Rothery (Marillion) have released the single ‘Red Dragon’ from their upcoming collaborative instrumental album, ‘The Roaring Waves’. The project, which has been in development for nearly a decade, is scheduled for release on August 28, 2026, via InsideOutMusic.

The album features seven instrumental tracks designed to create cinematic, atmospheric soundscapes rather than technical guitar displays. ‘Red Dragon’ incorporates elements such as the hurdy-gurdy and sitar to evoke an oriental atmosphere, inspired by the name of an East India Company ship.

In a discussion regarding the project, the duo noted that they opted for a two-guitar arrangement to maintain a musical ‘conversation’ rather than the potential arguments of a larger band. The recording process involved spontaneous improvisations at the Racket Club and personal studios, supported by keyboardist Riccardo Romano and various live drummers to ensure an organic sound.
