Steve Hilton mounts strong challenge in California governor race

Republican candidate Steve Hilton says California voters are "desperate for change" and expresses confidence he will finish in the top two of the gubernatorial race. He blames the state's 16‑year Democratic leadership for high living costs, rising crime and a homelessness crisis, and proposes tax cuts, affordable housing initiatives and expanded energy production as solutions.

Hilton points to the Democrats' control of all statewide offices, both legislative chambers and the state Supreme Court, arguing they have failed to address these problems. Early vote counts show he could secure the runoff spot against Democrat Xavier Becerra, with billionaire Tom Steyer trailing in third place.
