Steve Hilton advances to California governor runoff against Xavier Becerra

In California’s June 2 top‑two primary, Republican Steve Hilton — a British‑born former Fox News host endorsed by Donald Trump — captured about 25 % of the vote, placing second behind Democrat Xavier Becerra, who led with roughly 27‑28 %. Both will face off in the November 3 general election for the state’s governorship, succeeding term‑limited Gov. Gavin Newsom. Hilton’s campaign pledges include cutting income taxes for the first $100,000 of earnings, deregulating housing to create “starter homes,” and slashing state spending. Becerra, former California attorney general and U.S. health secretary, will continue promoting progressive policies on health care, housing and climate. Billionaire Tom Steyer, who spent over $200 million, finished third and will not advance. The race will decide leadership of a $4 trillion economy grappling with high living costs, homelessness and water challenges.
