Steve McCrea ports Doom to Commodore 64

Engineer and programmer Steve McCrea, noted for work on Metroid titles and the VR port of Resident Evil 4, is creating a working build of id Software’s Doom for the 8‑bit Commodore 64. The project reuses code from his earlier first‑person dungeon crawler The Keep for the VIC‑20 and employs ray‑casting in a tile‑grid, allowing variable floor and ceiling heights, elevators, opening doors and visible weapons.

A recent work‑in‑progress video shows the classic Doom levels E1M1 through E1M8 running with dynamic lighting and a skybox on the C64 hardware. McCrea has completed those eight levels and is now seeking a musician for the soundtrack. Apogee Software founder Scott Miller, who once begged id Software to make a C64 version, praised the effort as something previously deemed impossible.
