Steve Merrick Cup rugby sevens tournament draws 50+ teams

Over 50 teams participated in the Steve Merrick Cup rugby sevens tournament at Waratah Oval, featuring 24 girls' teams and 31 boys' teams across under-14 and under-16 divisions.

In the boys' competitions, St Francis Xavier defeated Trinity College in the under-14s final, while Hunter Valley Grammar won the under-16s title against Hunter Sports High. In the girls' divisions, Hunter Sports took the under-14s title and Trinity won the under-16s. Winners from these divisions will advance to the state finals in Sydney next month.

Several players were selected for regional development programs. Noah Brady, Aubrey Krisenthal-Collins, Finn Brownlee, and Luca McCourt have been named to the NSW Waratahs under-14s squad as part of the NSW Rugby Next Gen U15 program. Additionally, six other players from the Hunter region were selected for the NSW Gen Next 15s side.
