Steve Pikiell announces cancer diagnosis at Rutgers
Rutgers men's basketball head coach Steve Pikiell announced on Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with cancer. Pikiell, 58, disclosed the news in a letter to supporters, stating that he underwent successful surgery following the diagnosis.
Pikiell expressed his intention to remain involved with the team to the best of his ability as he navigates his treatment plan. He is receiving medical care from RWJBarnabas Health and Memorial Sloan Kettering. While there is no set timeline for a full return to his duties, he plans to be involved during the upcoming 2026-27 season.
Associate head coach Brandin Knight will take on additional responsibilities and will lead the program if Pikiell is unable to perform his coaching duties. Pikiell is entering his 11th season at Rutgers, where he has compiled a 161-160 record.
