Steve Vai’s Fire Garden marks 30th anniversary

The 30th anniversary of Steve Vai’s fourth studio album, ‘Fire Garden’, marks a milestone for the guitarist’s ambitious conceptual work. Originally conceived as a double album, the 1996 release utilized advancing CD technology to fit its 18 tracks onto a single disc.

The album is divided into two distinct sections: ‘Phase I’, which is primarily instrumental, and ‘Phase II’, which focuses on Vai’s vocals and songwriting. Notable tracks include ‘The Crying Machine’ and the ‘Fire Garden Suite’. The record also features ‘Dyin’ Day’, an instrumental piece stemming from Vai’s 1994 recording sessions with Ozzy Osbourne.

Released through Epic Records, the album achieved international chart presence, reaching No. 22 in Finland and No. 30 in France. The production featured a diverse group of musicians, including drummers Deen Castronovo and Mike Mangini, and bassists John Avila and Stuart Hamm.
