Steve Waugh criticizes ICC format changes and Rohit Sharma's future
Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has criticized the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding changes to the 2027 ODI World Cup format and raised questions about veteran Indian batter Rohit Sharma's future in the tournament.
Waugh described the ICC's decision to reduce the main tournament from 14 teams to 12 as a “backward step.” He noted that while soccer's FIFA has expanded its World Cup field, cricket is moving in the opposite direction, arguing that inclusivity is necessary for the sport to become a truly global game.
Additionally, Waugh addressed the longevity of Rohit Sharma, who will be 40 years old during the 2027 tournament. While acknowledging Sharma's talent, Waugh stated that the veteran must demonstrate “100 per cent commitment and preparation” to secure his place. Sharma has previously expressed his intention to compete in the 2027 event.
