Steven Reyme calls for better regulation of noise in Suriname residential areas

Steven Reyme, the parliamentary leader of the A20 faction in Suriname, has called for improved regulation regarding industrial and social disturbances in residential areas. During a session in the National Assembly, Reyme highlighted the negative impact of businesses operating in neighborhoods, specifically citing instances of machinery running 24 hours a day. He noted that the resulting noise, gas emissions, and dust pose significant risks to the health and comfort of local residents.

Reyme also addressed ongoing noise pollution in Paramaribo-Noord, particularly around Wilhelminastraat. He reported that residents are frequently disturbed late at night by buses playing loud music, as well as groups gathering in cars, e-bikes, and mopeds. These gatherings often involve illegal racing, public alcohol consumption, and littering.

The lawmaker questioned the transparency of the permit process, asking how businesses are allowed to operate in residential zones without sufficient impact assessments. He urged the government to strike a better balance between economic development and the livability of residential environments.
