Steven Spielberg's 'Disclosure Day' tops US box office with $44 M debut

Steven Spielberg's new science‑fiction thriller "Disclosure Day" opened in the United States with a $44 million domestic weekend, the strongest start of the week and the best opening for a Spielberg‑directed film in recent years. The movie follows whistleblower Josh O'Connor and meteorologist Emily Blunt as they uncover a government secret about extraterrestrials living among the public, and it has been praised by critics.

The audience is overwhelmingly adult – about 97 % of ticket‑buyers – with teenagers accounting for only 3 % of the opening crowd. The film outpaced fellow releases such as "Obsession" ($19 million) and "Backrooms" ($11 million), while "Scary Movie" and "Masters of the Universe" each saw roughly a 70 % drop in their second weeks.

In contrast, the biopic "Michael" continued its strong run, adding $4 million to reach a domestic total of $362 million and approaching the $1 billion worldwide mark.
