Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ underperforms at the box office
Steven Spielberg’s latest science fiction film, ‘Disclosure Day’, has seen a lukewarm reception at the box office. Despite its big-budget production, the film has earned less than $116 million in the United States to date.
The plot follows a group of whistleblowers attempting to reveal the existence of extraterrestrial life to the public. The story centers on Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor), who steals secrets from the private defense company Wardex, and Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt), a weather reporter with latent telepathic powers. They face opposition from Scanlon (Colin Firth), a Wardex leader attempting to use alien technology to maintain a cover-up.
While the film attempts to evoke the wonder of Spielberg’s 1977 classic ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’, critics have noted a split in tone between spy mystery and science fiction, with some suggesting the subject of alien disclosure may no longer hold the same cultural fascination as in previous decades.
