Stewart Island named world's quietest island in new Unspoilt Index

A growing travel trend known as “quietcation” — vacations focused on the absence of noise, crowds, and digital pressure — has led to the release of the Unspoilt Index by BookRetreats. The index ranks 100 islands globally based on criteria including population density, road networks, air traffic, nature preservation, dark skies, and natural coastlines.

Stewart Island (Rakiura) in New Zealand was named the world’s quietest island. Approximately 85 percent of the island is part of Rakiura National Park, and its status as an international dark sky reserve, combined with minimal road and air traffic, contributes to its top ranking.

Anafi, a small Greek island near Santorini, was named the winner in Europe, characterized by its low population density and tranquil beaches. Ilha Grande in Brazil took third place, noted for its tropical forests and the prohibition of private cars. Other notable mentions in the top 25 include the islands of Mljet and Vis.
