STF Ministers Gilmar Mendes and Nunes Marques clash over Banco Master investigation

Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) ministers Gilmar Mendes and Nunes Marques engaged in a heated dispute via WhatsApp, which has since been revealed following the discovery of messages on the phone of former banker Daniel Vorcaro.

During the exchange, Mendes accused Nunes Marques and Luiz Fux of being compromised in cases involving Banco Master. Mendes demanded that both ministers open their bank accounts and recuse themselves from related proceedings, suggesting they should ‘assume they are screwed’ and leave the processes.

The conflict escalated when Mendes criticized the alignment of the ministers and made comments regarding their families. In response to the confrontation, Nunes Marques blocked Mendes on the messaging app. Nunes Marques defended his integrity, stating he has accounted for his judicial activities for 15 years.

The dispute follows reports linking the sons of both ministers—Kevin Marques and Rodrigo Fux—to the Banco Master investigation. Following the controversy, Nunes Marques declared himself impeded in a trial related to the case.
