STI trends show rising infections and testing gaps in Mexico and Argentina

Public health officials and specialists are reporting concerning trends regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Mexico and Argentina.

In Yucatán, Mexico, the Network of People Affected by HIV (Repavih) has noted a significant gap in STI testing among women. Data from the organization shows that out of 1,410 tests conducted this year, 1,070 were performed on men while only 340 were performed on women. Among those tested, 30 people were identified with HIV, 13 with syphilis, and four with hepatitis. Experts suggest that a persistent perception of lower vulnerability among women contributes to lower testing rates.

In Argentina, specialists from the National University of La Plata report a steady rise in STI cases. National epidemiological data indicates that syphilis cases reached a peak in 2025 with 46,779 notified cases, representing a 75.6% increase compared to 2022. While improved testing and notification systems account for some of the rise, experts emphasize that there is an undeniable increase in actual exposure to transmission agents.
