Stichting Democratie en Media holds major stake in DPG Media
Stichting Democratie en Media (SDM) holds a significant and influential position within the Dutch media landscape. Managing assets exceeding 150 million euros, the foundation owns approximately 14 percent of DPG Media, the country’s largest newspaper publisher, which includes titles such as de Volkskrant, Trouw, and het AD. This stake grants SDM a form of veto power regarding the sale or dissolution of these publications.
Beyond its role as a major shareholder, SDM exerts influence through various institutional channels. It participates in the European press freedom monitor, co-founded the European Press Prize, and facilitates journalist training programs in collaboration with Leiden University.
While maintaining these institutional roles, SDM also uses its funds to support activist groups and legal actions associated with left-wing causes, including Extinction Rebellion, MOB, and Kick Out Zwarte Piet.
