Stichting Leergeld faces rising demand and volunteer shortage in Dutch regions

The Dutch charity Stichting Leergeld reports a growing shortage of volunteer intermediaries, causing longer waiting times for families needing assistance. In De Ronde Venen, 17 families are awaiting their first intake interview, and the organisation supported 112 families and 245 children in the first half of the year. High demand centres on basic provisions such as laptops, bicycles, clothing, glasses and swim lessons, with delays potentially affecting children’s school start and sport participation.

In Southeast Groningen, applications surge again as the new school year approaches. The foundation offers up to €720 per child entering bridge class for a bike, laptop and school supplies. A recent €50,000 donation enables families to request winter jackets and shoes for the first time. Sport‑related requests continue to dominate over cultural ones, and the charity estimates it reaches about 78 % of its target families across the region.
