Stiftung Warentest compares Aldi and Ariel laundry detergents
Stiftung Warentest conducted a comprehensive evaluation of 20 full laundry detergents in 2025, comparing major brands like Ariel and Persil against discount options from Aldi, Lidl, and Edeka.
The study focused on cleaning performance, environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness. Testing involved over 900 machine loads and the evaluation of 43 different types of stains. Results showed significant price variations, with the cost per wash cycle ranging from 16 to 34 cents.
While eight products received a 'good' rating, one product was rated as 'poor'. Discount products, specifically Aldi’s Tandil brand, performed competitively against premium brands, challenging the assumption that more expensive detergents are inherently more effective.
