Stiftung Warentest evaluates soundbars for improved TV audio

Stiftung Warentest has conducted a comprehensive evaluation of soundbars, testing 28 different models including 11 single units and 17 sets equipped with additional speakers. All tested devices received a 'Good' rating.

Experts note that soundbars are primarily designed to compensate for the audio limitations of modern, slim televisions, which often lack sufficient space for high-quality speakers. Soundbars can provide clearer dialogue, more powerful effects, and a fuller soundscape. While many modern models utilize 3D audio formats like Dolby Atmos to simulate a spatial environment, experts suggest that true home cinema experiences are best achieved with sets that include an active subwoofer and rear satellite speakers.

Consumer options vary from compact all-in-one units to complex surround sound systems. While all-in-one models offer convenience, systems with dedicated subwoofers provide significantly more bass and presence for films and music.
