Stiftung Warentest: Older drivers face higher car insurance premiums

An analysis by Stiftung Warentest of 36 car insurance tariffs reveals that older drivers face significantly higher premiums due to age-related surcharges. For a model customer in Berlin, the average cost for liability insurance for a 90-year-old is 657 euros per year, which is 177 percent higher than the 237 euros paid by a 55-year-old.

When combining liability and comprehensive (Vollkasko) coverage, the cost for a 90-year-old averages 1,971 euros annually, representing a 154 percent increase over the 777 euros paid by a 55-year-old. The study notes that while many insurers begin applying surcharges before age 60 or at age 65, many cap these increases once a driver reaches 82.

Experts suggest that regular price comparisons can lead to savings of several hundred euros per year. For those with comprehensive coverage, it is recommended to secure a new contract before canceling an existing one to avoid issues with mandatory coverage requirements.
