Nikolas Stihl, chairman of the power-equipment manufacturer STIHL, has called for significant economic reforms in Germany to combat a deepening structural crisis. Stihl argues that the nation must increase its total work volume to maintain prosperity and fund the social welfare system. His primary proposal includes a return to a 40-hour workweek without additional pay compensation.

Stihl highlighted that Germany has lost approximately 15 percent of its industrial production over the last eight years and continues to lose roughly 15,000 industrial jobs every month. He identified several domestic drivers for this decline, including high energy and labor costs, excessive regulation, high taxes, and declining education and skill levels. While acknowledging external pressures such as U.S. tariffs and China's industrial policies, he emphasized that internal structural issues are the primary obstacles to growth.

In addition to longer working hours, Stihl advocated for reducing bureaucracy, extending working lives, and attracting more skilled workers from abroad. He noted that while recent government reforms regarding health insurance and pensions are positive steps, they are insufficient to reverse the current economic trend.
