Stinging nettle recognized as significant medicinal plant in phytotherapy
The stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) has transitioned from a common weed to a highly regarded medicinal plant in European phytotherapy. Both the leaves and roots are recognized as herbal medicinal products in Europe, with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) having published specific monographs for nettle herb, leaves, and roots.
Clinical studies and systematic reviews indicate that stinging nettle root extracts can alleviate symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Patients using these extracts have reported improvements in the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), better urine flow rates, and enhanced overall quality of life. Additionally, the plant is noted for its anti-inflammatory properties due to bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, and lignans.
