Stink bugs invade homes in Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys), an invasive species originally from East Asia, is increasingly appearing in homes across Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina as temperatures drop in autumn.

Seeking warm, dry environments for winter hibernation, these insects enter buildings through cracks in window frames, doors, and ventilation openings. While harmless to humans and pets, they pose a significant threat to agriculture by damaging various fruit, vegetable, and ornamental plants.

Experts advise against using vacuum cleaners or crushing the insects, as this triggers a defense mechanism that releases a strong, unpleasant odor. Recommended prevention methods include sealing cracks with silicone, installing intact window screens, and using vinegar-based solutions or specialized insect repellents on exterior frames to deter entry.
