Stink bugs seek indoor shelter during autumn temperature drops

As temperatures drop during autumn, stink bugs are increasingly entering homes seeking shelter for the winter. These insects, such as the brown marmorated stink bug, are attracted to building facades and can enter through cracks, window gaps, or door frames.

Experts note that while these insects can be a nuisance due to the unpleasant odor they release when threatened, they are not dangerous to humans, pets, or buildings. They do not bite, transmit diseases, or reproduce inside homes. However, they can occasionally affect agricultural crops and fruits in gardens.

To prevent infestations, experts recommend sealing cracks, repairing insect screens, and checking items brought from outdoors like firewood. For removal, it is advised not to crush them to avoid the smell. Home remedies include using vinegar-based mixtures on window frames to deter them, or using a vacuum or container to relocate them without causing them to release their defensive secretions.
