STMicroelectronics confirms investment plan for Catania and Agrate sites

STMicroelectronics reiterated its industrial programme for the Catania (Sicily) and Agrate (Lombardy) plants, outlining a roadmap that extends to 2034. The company said the plan includes maintaining operation of the M5 silicon line and expanding gallium‑nitride (GaN) production, while a water‑supply contract has been signed.

Italian unions – the metalworkers’ federation UGL and the metalworkers’ union UILM – welcomed the confirmation but demanded clearer guarantees on job security, training and voluntary exit schemes. They noted that no permanent hires are foreseen until after 2029, with only temporary contracts expected in the short term. An agreement framework is slated for September 2026 to manage workforce reductions, rehiring and social‑security support.

Both unions called on the government to act as guarantor of the project's industrial and employment outcomes, stressing the strategic importance of the Catania and Agrate facilities for Italy’s semiconductor sector.
