STMicroelectronics launches automotive image sensor for in-cabin monitoring
STMicroelectronics has introduced the ST SafeSense VD56GA, a new 1.1 MP automotive image sensor designed for infrared in-cabin sensing. The sensor aims to help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers scale driver and occupant monitoring technologies across high-volume vehicle platforms by balancing performance with lower system costs.
The VD56GA utilizes a new back-illuminated pixel structure called ‘ST DeepNIR’, which provides 35% higher image sharpness and nearly 60% higher infrared sensitivity compared to the previous generation. This increased sensitivity allows for reduced power consumption and lower component costs by minimizing the need for intensive infrared lighting.
To simplify camera design and integration, the sensor includes embedded image-processing features such as mirror inversion, cropping, dark correction, auto-exposure, and piecewise linear processing. These built-in capabilities can eliminate the need for external image processors, reducing the overall number of components, PCB area, and power consumption. The sensor is available in a compact 3.7mm x 3.2mm CSP package, making it suitable for space-constrained locations like steering columns or behind displays.
