STMicroelectronics launches SafeSense VD56GA automotive image sensor

STMicroelectronics has introduced the ST SafeSense VD56GA, a 1.1-megapixel infrared image sensor designed for affordable in-cabin driver and occupant monitoring. The sensor aims to help automakers scale monitoring technologies from premium models to high-volume, mass-market vehicle platforms by reducing system complexity and cost.

The VD56GA utilizes a backside-illuminated pixel design known as ST DeepNIR, which reportedly provides 35% sharper images and nearly 60% greater infrared sensitivity compared to previous models. This increased sensitivity allows for the use of smaller, less expensive optics and simpler infrared lighting. The compact sensor handles internal tasks such as cropping, mirroring, dark calibration, and auto exposure, eliminating the need for an external image processor.

Production for the sensor involves front-end manufacturing at ST’s facility in Crolles, France, with packaging occurring in Asia. Industry analysts suggest that the market for driver and occupant monitoring systems is expected to exceed 70 million units by 2031.
