Stock tokenization aims to bridge public equities and blockchain

Stock tokenization is emerging as a potential bridge between traditional public equities and onchain finance. While the underlying assets remain the same, blockchain technology aims to improve access, enable 24/7 trading, and increase interoperability across lending and collateral markets.

Currently, public equities represent a massive market with relatively low onchain presence, with only approximately $2.8 billion in representation excluding ETFs. Proponents suggest this growth could mirror the early days of internet commerce, where technology changed the experience of accessing existing goods rather than the goods themselves.

However, regulatory frameworks introduce specific constraints. Under the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) framework for experimental Tokenized Securities Venues (TSVs), trading for certain tokenized stocks could be paused for up to three months if specific trading volume limits are breached. This regulation applies to the specific exchange and its affiliates rather than all versions of a tokenized stock globally.
