Stockholm Royal Palace: Police shoot armed man outside palace

On Tuesday evening, October 6, 2026, Swedish police shot and injured an armed man outside the Stockholm Royal Palace at Lejonbacken. The incident occurred around 18:30 local time after reports of an aggressive individual.

According to reports from Aftonbladet and Expressen, the man was armed with a knife and approached the palace guards, reportedly asking to be shot. Police initially attempted to subdue the suspect using a taser, but after unsuccessful attempts, officers discharged firearms, hitting the man in the legs.

The suspect was taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities confirmed that no members of the royal family were present in the palace during the incident. While Crown Princess Victoria had been at the palace earlier for a charitable meeting, she had departed shortly before the police operation began.

Police have cordoned off the area and are conducting an investigation, including reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. The suspect has been detained, and investigations are underway regarding threats against officials and violations of knife laws. Police stated there is no further danger to the public.
