Stockholm Water Week addresses global water bankruptcy

The 36th edition of World Water Week recently concluded in Stockholm, hosted by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI). Under the theme ‘Water for People and Progress,’ the event brought together scientists, political leaders, and activists to address the water crisis exacerbated by climate change.

A central focus of the discussions was a United Nations report presented by Professor Kaveh Madani, which warns of a state of ‘global water bankruptcy.’ This term describes an irreversible condition where decades of overexploitation and pollution have depleted natural capital, such as rivers, glaciers, and aquifers, beyond their ability to recover.

Regional concerns were also highlighted, including reports from Mexico regarding aquifer overpressure. In the Valley of Mexico, water extraction reportedly doubles the rate of natural recharge. Additionally, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has opened nominations for the 2027 Stockholm Water Prize, seeking to recognize outstanding contributions to water research, policy, and sustainable management.
