Stockton University to lay off 21 staff and faculty amid $20M deficit

Stockton University has announced plans to lay off 21 faculty and staff members at the end of the current school year to address a $20 million structural deficit. University President Joe Bertolino stated that the cuts will consist of 14 faculty members and seven staff members.

The university is facing financial pressure due to a 12% decline in enrollment since 2020 and a reduction in state financial aid. Under the fiscal 2027 state budget, the institution is set to receive $41.8 million in aid, a decrease from previous levels. Despite a 3% tuition increase, the school continues to struggle with these fiscal challenges.

Bertolino noted that the layoffs will follow collective bargaining rules with the American Federation of Teachers and the Communications Workers of America. The university administration indicated it would monitor the impact of these cuts on academic programs and students.
