Stomach cancer diagnosis linked to microwave usage habits in China

A 47-year-old man in Hunan, China, has been diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer following persistent abdominal pain and diarrhea. Medical professionals identified two specific lifestyle habits related to microwave use that may have contributed to his condition.

First, the patient frequently used low-quality plastic containers to heat food. While safe melamine plastics are generally harmless, some manufacturers use cheaper urea-formaldehyde alternatives to reduce costs. When subjected to high temperatures in a microwave, these low-quality plastics can release formaldehyde, which is linked to gastrointestinal and respiratory issues, including cancer.

Second, the man relied heavily on ultra-processed and pre-packaged foods, heating them daily for convenience. Doctors noted that while the microwave itself is not at fault, the combination of improper container use and a diet of highly processed foods poses significant health risks.
