Stop Biometano CLM challenges regional biomethane decree

The regional platform Stop Biometano CLM has submitted over 5,400 allegations against a regional government decree regarding the conditions for transforming organic waste into biomethane. The group, which includes 46 collectives and the Verdes-Equo CLM party, is seeking the nullification of the decree, labeling it an ‘unsustainable speculative agro-energy development model.’

Representatives stated that the current decree creates legal insecurity and could lead to judicial action if the regional government does not revise its position. They expressed concerns that the proposed plants are polluting, malodorous, and harmful to local flora, fauna, and landscapes. Currently, approximately 100 biomethane plants are in the installation process, with three active sites located in Albacete, Toledo, and Cuenca.

The platform has requested a meeting with regional President Emiliano García-Page and criticized the Sustainable Development Counselor, Mercedes Gómez, for meeting more frequently with gas and construction companies than with local interest groups.
