Stop Climate Chaos Scotland urges rejection of North Sea oil fields

Stop Climate Chaos Scotland (SCCS), a coalition representing approximately one million supporters, has urged the UK Prime Minister to reject consent for the Jackdaw and Rosebank oil and gas fields in the North Sea. The group argues that approving these developments would violate the spirit of the Labour Party's manifesto commitments.

SCCS claims that the lifetime carbon emissions from these two projects could lead to as many as 65,495 excess heat deaths by the end of the century. The campaign comes as the public consultation for the Rosebank field, the largest untapped oil field in the North Sea, nears its deadline.

While the previous Conservative government had approved production at both sites, those decisions were overturned following a legal challenge by Greenpeace. The final decision now rests with Labour ministers. The group highlighted existing climate impacts, including recent heatwaves in England and Wales and wildfires in the Cairngorms National Park, as evidence of the urgent need to block new fossil fuel developments.
