Stop & Shop to close additional New Jersey and Connecticut stores

Stop & Shop, the Northeast grocery chain owned by Dutch retailer Ahold Delhaize, announced the closure of at least four underperforming stores – three locations in New Jersey (including Basking Ridge and Westfield) and one in Connecticut. The company said affected employees will be offered transfer opportunities to other stores in its network of more than 350 locations across the region.

The closures follow a broader turnaround effort that saw 32 stores shut in 2024 and reflect industry pressure from rising labor, transportation and food costs, as well as intensified competition from Walmart, Aldi, warehouse clubs and Amazon Fresh. Similar downsizing moves have been reported by rivals such as Kroger, which plans to close roughly 60 stores by year‑end.
