Stora Enso plans permanent closure of Veitsiluoto sawmill

Stora Enso is planning to permanently close its Veitsiluoto sawmill in Kemi and relocate pine sawing operations to its other facilities in Oulu and Kalajoki. The company has initiated change negotiations involving the entire sawmill workforce of approximately 60 employees. These negotiations are expected to last three weeks.

According to the company, continuing operations at the century-old Veitsiluoto site would require significant investments. In contrast, the modern sawmill in Oulu is currently in an expansion phase. If the plan proceeds, the sawmill will not restart following the current furlough period, which is scheduled to run from early August until the beginning of October.

Matti Lielahti, head of Stora Enso’s Oulu business unit, stated that the company is committed to conducting the negotiations carefully and responsibly. While the Veitsiluoto site faces closure, the company noted that wood usage will remain largely consistent due to the needs of the Oulu business unit.
