Stord SV opposes aquaculture expansion in Hardangerfjord

Stord SV has expressed opposition to the expansion of aquaculture facilities in the Hardangerfjord, citing significant environmental concerns. The political group argues that current nutrient emissions from aquaculture, agriculture, industry, and sewage are already placing the fjord under intense pressure.

According to the group, the discharge of nitrogen and phosphorus leads to eutrophication and algae blooms, which deplete oxygen levels and reduce water quality. They note that while oxygen levels remain partially usable, they are approaching critical limits. Furthermore, chemical pollution from copper, zinc, and delousing agents is cited as a threat to the local environment.

While the aquaculture industry produces approximately 100,000 tons of fish annually in the Hardangerfjord, research from the Institute of Marine Research suggests that doubling production could lead to high risks of eutrophication and damage to fish, plants, and corals. Consequently, the State Administrator has implemented a ban on new establishments, a decision that has led to legal challenges from aquaculture operators.
