Spain floods: Storm Adam causes fatalities and widespread damage

Storm Adam, a high-altitude isolated depression (DANA), has caused severe flooding and torrential rainfall across Spain's Mediterranean coast, particularly in the Valencian Community, Alicante, and the Balearic Islands. The storm resulted in at least five confirmed deaths, including victims in Valencia, Catalonia, and Andalusia. In the town of Oliva, rainfall exceeded 530 liters per square meter within 24 hours, with some areas in Alicante recording over 700 liters.

Emergency services rescued approximately 496 people, often using helicopters to reach residents stranded on rooftops. More than 2,100 people were evacuated, and at one point, over 800,000 residents were under confinement orders.

The Valencian government (Generalitat) has approved an initial aid package of 23.5 million euros to assist affected residents. This includes up to 6,000 euros for damages to primary residences, 3,000 euros for secondary homes, and monthly relocation assistance of 800 euros for up to twelve months. Additionally, municipalities can access 200,000 euros for urgent infrastructure repairs and cleaning. The agricultural sector is also facing significant impact, with the government providing free phytosanitary treatments to recover over one million trees damaged by excessive moisture.
