Europe weather: Storms Austen and Boelo cause widespread disruption
A series of intense storms, named Austen and Boelo, have caused significant disruption across Europe, impacting power supplies, transportation, and public safety.
Storm Austen heavily impacted France and the United Kingdom. In France, wind gusts reached up to 161 km/h in Finistère, leading to power outages for between 161,000 and 300,000 households, primarily in Brittany and Normandy. The storm also disrupted rail and air travel, including flight diversions at Paris Charles de Gaulle. In the UK, Austen caused power outages for approximately 12,000 homes and led to the partial collapse of the historic West Pier in Brighton. Significant travel delays were reported in Scotland and across the English rail network due to fallen trees and debris.
Storm Boelo is expected to follow, bringing heavy rain and high winds to Northern Europe. In Norway, orange flood warnings are in effect for parts of Eastern Norway, with evacuations reported in Larvik. The storm is also expected to impact the UK, including the Isle of Wight, where flood alerts and heavy rain warnings have been issued. In the Netherlands, the storm has prompted the cancellation of various public events and adjustments to ferry services. Other regions, including Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland, are also facing weather warnings for wind and heavy precipitation.
