Northern Europe storms Boelo and Austen cause fatalities and widespread power outages

Back-to-back storms, Boelo and Austen, have battered Northern Europe, resulting in at least one death and significant infrastructure damage. In southwestern Scotland, a 60-year-old man was killed by a falling tree near Castle Douglas. Another incident in North London involving a falling tree also resulted in a fatality.

Power outages have affected hundreds of thousands of households across the region. In the United Kingdom, over 82,000 homes lost electricity, while approximately 60,000 homes in France and at least 10,000 in Germany were without power. In France, the energy company Enedis reported that nearly 288,000 homes experienced outages at the peak of Storm Austen.

Transportation has faced severe disruptions. Wind gusts reaching 135 km/h in Scotland and Argyll and Bute led to the closure of roads and rail lines. Aviation was heavily impacted, with approximately 90 flight cancellations at Amsterdam Schiphol and significant delays at London Heathrow and Frankfurt. In Germany, power outages in Freiburg-Breisgau forced a main hospital to limit services to emergency cases only.

Authorities in the UK, France, and Germany have issued various weather warnings, including orange and yellow alerts, as officials manage flooding, fallen trees, and debris risks.
