Stormont ministers demand fair funding for Northern Ireland

The Stormont Executive has issued a collective letter calling on the UK Government to provide a ‘fair funding envelope’ for Northern Ireland. Ministers from the four-party power-sharing Executive argue that current funding levels are insufficient to sustain or transform public services in the region.

Since April, departments have been forced to operate on contingency budgets due to an inability to agree on a budget for the current financial year. First Minister Michelle O’Neill stated that while the Executive has repeatedly requested a sustainable funding package, these calls have not been met, warning that citizens should not pay the price for funding failures.

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly emphasized the urgent need to resolve these issues to enable economic growth and service transformation. The ministers have also requested a meeting with the Prime Minister, noting that no official visit to the province has occurred since July 20.
