Stornoway energy conference addresses renewables and community concerns

Energy specialists gathered in Stornoway for a conference hosted by UHI North, West and Hebrides to discuss the role of communities in the renewable energy transition. The event focused on technologies such as hydrogen, battery storage, eMethanol, and fuel cells, featuring expertise from the Western Isles, Shetland, and South Africa.

Despite the technical focus on decarbonisation, the convention also highlighted significant local tensions. Representatives from the Association of Shetland Community Councils expressed frustration regarding the scale of renewable projects and a perceived lack of community consultation. Concerns were raised about the cumulative impact of individual developments on Shetland and the potential implications of offshore installations for local fishing fleets. Some participants suggested a pause in new developments until issues such as high fuel poverty in areas with significant wind power are addressed.
