Stourbridge rail services resume after wildfire damage

Passenger train services between Stourbridge and Kidderminster resumed on August 22 following an extensive recovery operation. The reopening follows devastating wildfires that broke out on August 13, causing significant damage to railway infrastructure between Stourbridge Junction and Hagley stations.

More than 200 railway workers, including engineers, arborists, and technical specialists, worked round-the-clock to repair the damage. The recovery efforts included replacing over 3,000 metres of signalling power and data cables, repairing drainage systems, installing 1,500 metres of new fencing, and replacing damaged signalling equipment and telecommunications systems.

Richard Parker, the Mayor of the West Midlands, described the devastation as ‘unprecedented’ and praised the ‘monumental effort’ by Network Rail teams. Denise Wetton, integrated managing director for GBR West Midlands, noted that the reopening marks an important milestone for the local community after the extensive repairs were completed.
