Stourbridge wildfires destroy dozens of homes in West Midlands

Residents in Stourbridge, West Midlands, are returning to their homes following devastating wildfires that destroyed 19 properties across five streets and damaged an additional 18. The blaze, which began on August 13, spread rapidly across approximately 500 acres due to dry conditions and strong winds.

Housing Secretary Angela Rayner visited the affected areas on August 18, describing the destruction as “absolutely horrendous.” She praised the community and emergency services while noting the government has introduced an additional £100 million for specialist wildfire crews and equipment to combat increasingly frequent fires linked to changing climate conditions.

Those returning to the area face significant hardships, including a lack of electricity, gas, and water. Dudley Council has deployed refuse trucks to assist residents with clearing out spoiled food from homes without power. Local fundraising efforts have already surpassed £75,000 to help families rebuild their lives. West Midlands Fire Service Chief Fire Officer Simon Tuhill stated that investigations into the cause of the fires are ongoing, noting that while many fires in the region appeared to be caused by human activity, this does not necessarily imply they were deliberate.
