STOXX 600 reports strong Q2 earnings driven by energy sector
European companies in the STOXX 600 index are experiencing one of their strongest earnings seasons in years. According to a study by FactSet, approximately 83% of companies have reported second-quarter results, showing an aggregate profit growth of about 20% in reported terms.
The energy sector has been the primary driver of this growth, fueled by oil prices. The sector recorded a 124% increase in earnings per share (EPS) and a 36% rise in sales. BP was a notable performer, reporting a second-quarter profit jump to $5.73 billion, up from $3.2 billion in the first quarter, aided by high volatility in energy markets due to conflict in the Middle East.
Other sectors also showed strength, with Real Estate seeing a 53% EPS increase and Basic Materials rising by 35%. Technology reported a 17% increase in EPS. Conversely, the Discretionary Consumer segment saw a 24% decline in profits, while Consumer Staples and Telecommunications showed lower single-digit growth.
