Stéphane Bern denounces destruction of French heritage during urban violence
French television presenter Stéphane Bern has expressed deep outrage following urban violence and the destruction of historical heritage during widespread protests on October 17, 2026. In a video shared on Instagram, Bern voiced his shock at images showing attacks on public buildings and symbols of the Republic.
Specific instances of damage reported include the burning of the 174-year-old Tourist Office in Lyon and the town hall in Limoges. In Marseille, the bust of Marianne was also targeted. Bern described the perpetrators as “wild hordes” and stated that such images are “shameful” and “revolting.”
In response to the destruction, Bern pledged his commitment to the restoration of damaged historical sites, stating, “We will restore them to their original state.” He framed his support as a way to reinforce national unity against the division caused by the violence.
