Östra Göinge implements school breakfast to boost student performance
Östra Göinge is among only five municipalities in Skåne, and one of a small number nationally, providing breakfast to middle school students. The initiative, part of the 'Skolresan 2030' program, aims to improve academic results by addressing hunger and concentration issues.
According to Louise Wendel, the municipality's education chief, students often arrive hungry, which negatively impacts their ability to focus on lessons. To combat this, students in grades 7-9 are offered sandwiches, while younger students in grades F-6 receive fruit.
A mapping by Arla and the National Students' Association (Elevernas riksförbund) reveals significant disparities in breakfast access across Sweden. Approximately 46 percent of responding municipalities do not serve breakfast in their schools. The data shows that one in three students does not eat breakfast regularly, a figure that rises to nearly one in two for students from lower-income households.
